April Update COVID-19 Impact Survey – RESULTS Economic Impact on Arts & Culture in Southeastern CT
SUMMARY Estimated Economic Impact (update as of 4/24/20)
for 6 week time period between March 13 to April 30, 2020
- $9.2M in total financial losses (nonprofit and for profit arts & cultural sector)
- 259K lost audience members, program attendees, or customers
- 701 staff impacted due to layoffs, furlough or reduced hours
- 58% have implemented major staff reductions (>50% of staff), while 27% at full staffing level/hours
- individual artists-50% are creating/performing as usual, 37% at reduced level, 13% stopped completely
- 64% applying to at least one relief program, including 48% applying to Paycheck Protection Program
BACKGROUND
The Southeastern CT Cultural Coalition conducted an April Update Survey from April 9-19, 2020 as a follow-up to the Early Impact Survey conducted March 14-17, 2020.
The survey request was distributed to our Partners and other stakeholders in the region to gather information about the status of employees, anticipated economic impact from March 13 to April 30th, and relief options being pursued due to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

- 50% Major Staff Reductions – more than 50% of staff

- 33% Full Staffing/Hours at usual March/April levels – No reductions
For Profit Businesses & Individual Artists – 32% of those responding
- $194K in total financial losses
- 12K lost audience members, program attendees, or customers
- 46 staff impacted due to layoffs, furlough or reduced hours
Creative Businesses
