In 2018, Make Music Day came to Connecticut for the first time. [See video below to learn more.] By 2019 in Southeastern CT, more than 100 performances took place at more than 70 locations on Make Music Day! Unlike traditional music festivals, Make Music Day celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of age, background or skill level. Make Music Day is an open invitation for everyone to make, enjoy, perform, teach and learn music on the longest day of the year and the launch of summer.

Typically featuring over 5,000 free outdoor concerts, performances, music lessons, jam sessions and other musical events on streets, sidewalks, parks and other public spaces across the U.S., the 2020 celebration took a virtual approach to encourage all people, of all musical abilities, to celebrate the joy of making music. Musicians of all ages used Facebook Live, YouTube and other platforms to share the joy of making music. Videos using #MakeMusicDaySECT or #MakeMusicDaySoutheasternCT received over 4,300 views within two days!

In 2021, the Cultural Coalition’s fourth annual Make Music Day coordinated for southeastern CT, 55 different musicians, duos or groups performed at 30 different venues. The 75 registered performances (promoted and listed on an online public schedule) were held mostly outdoors, live and in-person, following the all-virtual celebration in 2020. Nearly half of the performances were in various venues in New London. Old Lyme had 12 performers along a one-mile stroll, with events also at Norwich Arts Center, East Lyme Community Center, and libraries in Groton and Waterford.

Make Music Day is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21st. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries. (  Make Music Day is presented in the U.S. by The NAMM Foundation and coordinated by the non-profit Make Music Alliance.
