Southeastern CT’s arts and cultural organizations, entities and artists, like so many others, are deeply impacted by COVID-19. From sole proprietors, artists and small volunteer-run organizations, to professionally staffed museums, tourist attractions and arts centers, the Coalition includes a diverse cross section of 500+ nonprofit and for-profit individuals, businesses, groups and organizations.
Our COVID-19 Economic Impact Survey for Southeastern CT’s Arts & Cultural Organizations, Businesses and Artists shows that between March 13 and June 30, 2020:
≈ $16 Million in estimated lost revenue
≈ 700,000 lost audience members, program attendees, and visitors or customers
≈ 700 local employees impacted by layoffs, furloughs or reduced hours
The Cultural Coalition has established an economic recovery fund at the Community Foundation of Eastern CT in response to the COVID-19 crisis. The initiative will support the sustainability and recovery of arts & cultural institutions, including individual artists, and partner with the Foundation, a long-time trusted funder for our region. The Cultural Coalition will manage the grant programs and review panel, and recommend awards to be made through the Community Foundation. Through an open application process with review and recommendations by a grant panel and decision-making by the Cultural Coalition, the economic recovery fund will support Southeastern CT’s arts & culture sector. The fund will provide:
Support for individual artists through:
- Creation and presentation of virtual and live experiences, such as Arts on Demand program (details coming soon), capacity/technical and presentation support, arts & social impact and/or
- Relief funds for lost income due to cancelled events/work
Support for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations through:
- General operating support and/or
- Innovative and sustainable solutions for recovery
The fund will provide various grant opportunities that will change over time to align with the needs of the sector. Donations will be accepted from the general public, foundations, and corporations. A portion of the proceeds (7.5%) will support the Cultural Coalition to provide the fund’s advisory services and continue to support those we serve. There will be quarterly review of the fund balance, grant programs, awards and needs.
